Winter Clothing Drive
Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,
The wave of bitter cold weather that gripped Memphis was particularly harsh and
life-threatening for under-privileged and homeless Memphians.
To help alleviate
the hardship, a group of sisters in our community (Saadia Omer, Seema Abbasi and
Naseem Khan) initiated and coordinated a community-wide appeal with the help of
Muslim Society of Memphis (MSM) and the Memphis Islamic Center (MIC) to collect
CLEAN and usable warm clothing, bedding, and cash for homeless and needy men,
women, and children. Through this effort, the Memphis Muslim community helped
our own members stay safe and warm while extending a helping hand to the Memphis
community at large.
We are delighted to inform you that the Muslim community showed a remarkable
outpouring of humanitarianism and donated very generously to help protect the
poor and homeless in this weather. In less than 72 hours, more than 500 articles
of clothing and bedding were collected or bought and distributed to needy Muslim
families, the Salvation Army Center For Women and Children on Jackson Street,
and Memphis Union Mission on Poplar Avenue.
The Muslim Society of Memphis and the Memphis Islamic Center thank all the
donors for stepping upWinter Clothing Driveefficiently and generously. We are
humbled to have been able to help fellow Memphians during this bitterly cold
winter season. Insha-Allah, such efforts will empower us to become better
Muslims and allow the greater community to understand what Islam truly
represents in spirit and action. We hope to continue serving our less fortunate
neighbors and pray that our efforts will again be met with enthusiastic support
from the Memphis Muslim community, Insha-Allah.
May Allah reward everybody who took part in this modest effort. Wa salaam
